Welcome to my website, my name is John Williams and I am a professional photographer based in Brighton, South East UK. I hope you enjoy the selection of my work presented here and if you have any comments, questions or would like to book a photo shoot please contact me.

My work ranges from portraiture, still life and landscape to commercial, food and drink and wildlife photography, and although I am based in Brighton I will travel when the job requires it. I work primarily using a digital camera with a selection of lenses and also sometimes use traditional photographic methods; I particularly like black and white film and print black and white photographs myself by hand.

From a young age I had an interest in photography, but it wasn't until 1998 when I was given my first SLR camera, that I really began to explore the medium shooting rolls of 35mm colour and black and white film for fun. Later that same year I enrolled at college and studied A-level Photography, Art & Design and Media Studies, a combination that, despite the heavy work load, pushed me creatively and helped to reinforce my passion for photography. My photographic education then continued as I progressed on to take a Higher National Diploma in Photography & Digital Imaging, which introduced me to large format and digital photography, both of which I explored more and more in the two years that followed and allowed me to progress to degree level. In 2002 I took a place at Southampton Institute and entered straight in to the second year on the photography degree course, and after two more years of hard work, I graduated with honours. During this time I produced some of the work you see here and since then I have worked with artists, designers, models, stylists and various companies on many projects, as well as being a photography technical demonstrator.

Most recently I have branched out into wildlife photography and have been photographing British birds and wildfowl across East and West Sussex. A selection of my wildlife and nature photography can be seen here and this is something that I intend to build upon and expand as it has become a real passion of mine. Some of the shots that don't quite make it, works in progress, or ideas I am working on I post on my photography blog alongside some explanatory text, and occasionally I will write tutorials and post them there too.

Photographers that inspired me include Brassai and Henri Cartier-Bresson, as well as Imogen Cunningham amongst many others, who all inspired me because of their unique styles and ability to capture an intimate moment. I continue to admire their work now but also take inspiration from more contemporary photographers as well as numerous painters and artists.
